Budget Beauty

Want an inexpensive way of achieving a youthful base without the need for makeup trickery? Then look no further than our avocado and honey face mask.

After being told as children not to play with our food, it felt somewhat unnatural plastering our faces with avocado in the name of beauty but it really does work. Avocados aren’t just there for your side order of guacamole – they are packed with vitamin A, which clears off any dead skin cells and cleanses your skin and vitamin E, which improves your skin’s health and gives you that ‘my skin is always like this’ glow. The added honey helps for an extra dose of hydration and to lock down moisture.

Avocado Face Mask Ingredients

You will need
1/2 ripe avocado
Generous dollop of runny honey

Here’s how…

1  Avocado in hand – carefully halve and de-pip.
2 Carve out one half of the avocado into a bowl.

Avocado Face Mask Step 2

3 Mash with a fork.
4 Add a dollop of honey – don’t be shy!
5 Whisk a little more. Try to get a smooth consistency as lumps can be harder to apply onto your face. The honey will stop the mask slipping off.
6 Scoop into a container so you can keep hold of any extra.

Avocado Face Mask step 6

7 Slather generously onto your face and leave to ‘set’ for 10 minutes.
8 Remove with a warm, damp cloth and see the results for yourself!

Meet… The Girl in the Bowler Hat

For the next instalment of our Meet the Blogger… series we grilled fashion journalism student, Amy  from The Girl in the Bowler Hat. Read on to find more about the girl behind the blog…
Ok, first up who is ‘Girl in the Bowler Hat’ for those that don’t already know?
My name is Amy, and I’m a 21 year old blogger currently living in the North East of England. My blog, The Girl in the Bowler Hat, is a bit of everything really, but I focus mainly on taking plenty of personal style posts in hidden gems I’ve found in my hometown.
How long have you been blogging, and what made you want start it in the first place?
I’ve been running my current blog for just over 18 months and I am loving it more than ever at the moment! This isn’t actually my first blog, as I’ve had a few in the past, but none of those ever felt right. So, I racked my brains and The Girl in the Bowler Hat was born and I’m very proud of it. I began my blog after spending years reading them and thinking ‘Oh hey, I could do that’ so I decided to give it a whirl. It felt like a nice sideline while studying my degree in fashion journalism.
 What inspires your blog posts?
A lot of my inspiration comes from other blogs, as there is such a huge amount of talent and a lot of what I know I’ve learnt from fellow bloggers. You name it, it’s been blogged before. I also gain a lot of inspiration from just day to day life, if I’ve had any exciting days, if I see someone in the street wearing an outfit I love, that sort of thing. Although I probably should, I rarely plan ahead with my blog posts – I tend to just go with what I want to post about at the time. Of course, I love the usuals too, with my fail-safe inspiration places being Pinterest and a good film marathon.
How would you describe your style?
I think my style changes quite a lot, and there’s no fixed ‘look’ I tend to go for. My favourite era is the 60s, and I think I’ll always have a love for a-line skirts and collared dresses. Think Alexa Chung meets Audrey Hepburn meets Emma Watson (and a little bit of Blair Waldorf thrown in there for good measure).
What three items can you not live without?
My Macbook, which pretty much contents my whole life. I’d also say magazines, as I’m a big of a magazine junkie (and currently own more than 150 – eek). Finally, my iPhone, not just because of Twitter, or Instagram( although I’m massively for social media) but to listen to music on. I’m always listening to music!
What do you get up to when you’re not blogging?
Just the usual really, spending time with my friends, reading, watching an obscene amount of television. I also love photography, it’s an area I’d love to branch into in the future.

Tell us something no one else knows about you…
I’m a little bit (a lot) obsessed with Gossip Girl, and also Criminal Minds… you know, because the two programmes are so similar.
What other bloggers are on your reading list?
Oh gosh, there’s so many! My favourites have to be Wish Wish Wish and What Olivia Did – I’ve been reading both of those blogs for as long as I can remember. There’s a whole host of NE bloggers I love too, such as Talking About M, The Lovecats Inc, and Thumbelina Lillie
And lastly, as we’ve just released our travel issue, we want to know your favourite holiday destination.
Well, I’m not the most travelled unfortunately! However, me and my family have been to the island of Menorca many times, and it’s a beautiful place.

Budget Beauty

Our Budget Beauty posts to date have come in the form of recipes and freshly made pamper treatments, but this week we’re all about the D.I.Y way to display our beloved beauty products. We’ve collected a few jars and containers that were destined for the recycle bin to house the beauty bits we reach for the most.
D.I.Y #1 – The Coffee Jar
This coffee jar is a perfect size to store those every day beauty pads we use for our skincare routine or for a spring mani-pedi! We find this storage much easier than digging your way to the bottom of a make up pad bag, and it looks clean and neat sitting on your beauty desk. Make sure you wash the jar thoroughly – that strong coffee smell likes to stick around!
D.I.Y #2 – The Candle
Burning yummy candles throughout the winter evenings has left us with far too many burnt down to the wick. This holder used to smell of cherry blossom and the pattern on the outside made it too beautiful to throw away.  Scoop out the remainder of the candle wax from the jar. Fill with warm water, washing up liquid, and let it stand. This step just melts away any candle wax that couldn’t be scooped out and allows it to wash clean. then rinse and dry. Stand on your dressing table, next to your first DIY and pop in your daily make up brushes.  Having our favourite make up brushes on hand makes the make up in the morning run a whole lot smoother!
D.I.Y #3 – The Mini Candle
We told you we had lot’s of empty candles, right? This was a mini that we quickly burnt through and now holds our lip products. You could pop anything in here really – bobby pins, hair bands, manicure utensils – but we like to display our newest lip loves. Just follow the same steps for D.I.Y#2. You could even add a little ribbon bow around the top of the jar – easy peasy! .
We’d love to your own creations so please share them with us over on Twitter or Instagram… don’t forget to tag us in your pics and use the #BudgetBeauty hashtag!

Budget Beauty

Lip scrubs are an effective way to treat your pout to some TLC and put that extra coconut oil from the last Budget Beauty post to good use. Giving your lips a gentle scrub every now and again not only sheds the unwanted dead skin, but also smooths out the canvas for lipstick application. So, if you’re a bold lip lover – listen up!

What you’ll need
1tbsp White or Brown Sugar
1tbsp Honey
1 Heaped tbsp Coconut Oil
Process
1. Mix the honey and coconut oil together in a bowl. Binding them together creates the perfect conditioner to protect and soften your lips, locking in the moisture as the sugar exfoliates the layers of your lips.
2. Fold the sugar into the mixture, being careful not to whisk as the consistency will become too runny. We chose to use white sugar for our home made lip scrub, as it’s not a coarse as brown sugar ad we already had it stocked in our pantry! After all, this is budget beauty.
3. At this point, it’s optional to add in any essential oils or extras that you might want. We chose not too as the coconut oil itself tastes delicious! But, we suggest a couple of drops of peppermint oil works a treat to freshen your lips and breath at the same time.
4. Gently work into your lips and remove with a damp cloth. Feel the softness! We were amazed with the results, the sugar wasn’t drying on the lips at all as the coconut oil acted almost like a lip balm and coated the skin with moisture.
5. At this point, you can leave your lips bare, or apply your favourite bold lippy!
So there you have it, a Budget Beauty way to achieving an enviable pout! #selfie

Budget Beauty

We’re girls who loves nothing more than a trip to the hairdressers and having some down time in a comfy reclined chair, having our tresses lathered up and head firmly massaged – we’re feeling drowsy just typing this! But, we all know that a salon smooth Barnet sometimes comes with a hefty price tag – Well, not any more! Set up salon in your bathroom with this D.I.Y Coconut Oil Hair Mask.
What you’ll need
Coconut OilCoconut Oil is an amazing product to have in your pantry, you can use it on your hair, your skin and even in your cooking! So when buying a tub, look at it more as an investment.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil - Optional.
Step One: Scoop out some coconut oil from the container and massage into dry hair. Apply root to tip if your hair is particularly dry, or just to the ends if you prefer. Coconut oil acts as a conditioner for your much loved locks and it smells delicious too! – think ‘Bounty’. If you’re wanting to add extra virgin olive oil into this mask to create a hot oil treatment then you can mix both the olive oil and coconut oil into a bowl and place in the microwave for a few seconds. Extra virgin olive oil will hydrate your locks and applying the product to your hair warm allows the hair follicles to open and allows the product to get down deep to sort damaged hair. You really will feel like you’re at the salon.
Step Two:Wrap your hair into a towel, or use a band to push it away from your face and leave in for a good 20 minutes to do it’s thing.
Step Three:Hop into the shower and rinse out. Make sure you shampoo your hair TWICE as to not leave any excess product in your hair that might create grease and whack on some conditioner if your hair is crying out for it!
Step Four: Now to style it up. Flip your head upside down and part dry with a hair dryer to achieve volume in your roots. Flip your head up and say ‘Hello’ to your new crowning glory!

Meet…What I Heart Today

Lily Pebbles is definitely a girl after our own hearts, and her blog What I Heart Today has become another firm favourite. So read on to find out more about the girl behind the blog…

Ok, first up who is What I Heart Today?
What I Heart Today is run by me, Lily Pebbles and it’s mainly a beauty site with a bit of fashion and lifestyle thrown in
.
How long have you been blogging, and what made you want start it in the  first place?
What I Heart Today has been going for 3 years and it all started at University when I was encouraged to start a blog as part of our Digital Marketing module.
What inspires your blog posts?
Anything really. I’m obsessed with beauty and I’m always eager to try out new launches and tell everyone my thoughts. I read a lot of other blogs and watch beauty videos on YouTube so that really inspires me too.
How would you describe your style?
I like to keep things quite classic and stylish, but most importantly I’m all about the comfort.
What three items can you not live without?
My leather detail Zara coat, lip balm and my camera.
What do you get up to when you’re not blogging?
When I’m not blogging I’m most likely to be shopping, making videos for my YouTube channel, reading other blogs, painting my nails on the sofa or eating out at a new restaurant.
Tell us something no one else knows about you…
I hide my childhood diaries under my bed and would die of embarrassment if anyone ever read them. I guess I should find a new hiding place now…

And lastly, what’s your favourite thing about Winter?
Coming inside and getting warm. Lighting a candle (usually Diptyque), putting on cosy loungewear, making a hot Ribena and watching films

Meet… Gh0stparties

Our latest instalment of Meet… the bloggers series sees us chat to Kate from Gh0stparties. Whose obsession for all things beauty has us glued to her youtube videos. Read on to find out more about the girl behind the blog… and her Jedward secret!

Ok, first up who is Gh0st Parties?
Gh0stparties is me, Kate. I’m 21 and live in London (soon to be Glasgow!) I spend absolutely all my time blogging about beauty and fashion! I’m obsessed with skincare and I have an unhealthy addiction to all thing internet related.
How long have you been blogging, and what made you want start it in the first place?
I guess it would be coming up to two years now (wow!) and I’m not sure how I got in to it as I hadn’t heard of blogs at the time but I had finished uni and I was getting more and more in to beauty products and I started writing about them. After I found the beauty community it inspired me to post more and be more engaged and it’s just taken off from there.
What inspires your blog posts?
In all honesty, I don’t read too many other blogs as I try not to be influenced too much by what other people are buying (so difficult!), I want to test products myself, products that I would buy anyway and not items that are hyped up at the time, to keep my blog original and to stay ahead of the trends. Of course, there are some blogs and bloggers that I adore and I guess they inspire me, as well as my non-blogger friends who are never sure where to start when it comes to beauty or style. Inspiration is all around me, I guess!

How would you describe your style?
I would say grunge mixed with girly, I like trends but I love to give my own take on them and I only wear what suits my shape.
We love watching your youtube videos, have you got any advice for any other bloggers who are thinking of doing their own?
I would absolutely say not to over think it, take the plunge and brush off any negative comments. YouTube is different from blogging and I think when I started my channel (much later than my blog), a lot of followers of mine expected me to be perfect from day one but it does take a bit of getting used to so keep at it. The awkwardness and bad habits will ease out eventually and you will always get more positive comments than negative so always, always concentrate on the good! I have some awful habits that are always pointed out to me in the comments but life’s too short to worry about it.
What three items can you not live without?
My iPhone, Copella apple juice and REN face masks.
What do you get up to when you’re not blogging?
I scale the country a lot as my family and friends live in Scotland – you will usually find me in a bar in Glasgow with my boyfriend or in bed watching Revenge. Mainly though, I blog or think about blogging!
Tell us something no one else knows about you…
I once met Jedward and got their autograph and my picture with them. No shame. None.
And lastly, what’s your favourite thing about Summer?
Impromptu picnics in the park in the evening with rosé wine and strawberries and the best people.

Peter Pan

It’s safe to safe we’re a little obsessed with peter pan collars here at Cellardoor HQ, let’s face it who isn’t! So when we saw this tutorial over at The Beauty Department we couldn’t resist having a go at trying the cute collars on our nails too.  We might need a little more practice though…
Let us know if you try it too!

Florence + Kiehls

Musical genius Florence and the Machine and cosmetic power house Kiehl’s are the latest to collaborate on a charity product, which not only benefits Teenage Cancer Trust (with 100% of the profits going directly to the charity) but our arms and legs too!
Kiehl’s iconic Crème de Corps body lotion has had a Florence and the Machine makeover and boost ingredients such as; Coca Butter, Sesame Oil and Beta-Carotene, which are great for keeping the skin healthy and lustrous. So ladies pop over to Kiehl’s website and order yourself a bottle, not only is it for the greater good of cancer, it’s for the greater good of skin!
